The Turkish Red Crescent inaugurated a playground in Syria's northwestern Idlib city. The opening of the playground in Hope camp in Kelbit village marked April 23 celebrations for Turkey's National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. Kadir Akgunduz, field coordinator in Syria for the aid group, said the playground will help heal the psychological wounds that years of war have left behind on children from Idlib and western Hama cities. Six more playgrounds will be established in the region, Akgunduz added.
He said more than 900 children aged 6 to 10 live in the camp. Since Jan. 18, the camp has been providing accommodation to 4,000 people who fled atrocities by the Assad regime in Idlib and Hama. Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since 2011 when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict, according to the UN.
